Challenger Motor Freight is proud to announce that its Corporate Headquarters in Cambridge, ON has received LEED® certification.

What is LEED®?

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a point-based rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to provide a recognized standard for the construction industry to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs. The Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) has adapted the USGBC LEED rating system to meet the specific climates, construction practices and building regulations in Canada.

LEED differs from other rating systems in that it has quantified most of the "green credits". Points are earned for building attributes considered environmentally beneficial including:

• Site development
• Water efficiency
• Energy efficiency
• Materials and resources
• Indoor environmental quality
• Innovation and design

Challenger's Initiative

When ground first broke on its new corporate headquarters, Challenger took the initiative to ensure the project would incorporate features and strategies that would effectively use the land and minimize the environmental impact of construction and operation.

Challenger’s concern for the environment was an important factor in designing and constructing this high performance building.

Key features include:

• Energy efficient design including heat recovery and the use of ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling
• The use of low flow fixtures, reducing water consumption by 34%
• Products with zero/low VOCs were given preference within the building
• Views to the exterior in over 90% of the interior spaces provide occupants with a connection to the outdoors
• Local and recycled materials were given preference during construction, and account for a large percentage of the building
